SELF-CARE SUNDAY: MINDFUL WALKING

I’m notorious for going on long, quiet, clear headed, intentionally mindful walks. There’s nothing like taking a walk with mo’ nature to nurture the mind, body and soul.

As mundane as walking may seem, it has become an essential, irreplaceable, fundamental part of my growth. My close friends & family have even coined them as “Sarah Walks” (the obsession is real.)

I practice mindful walking with the goal of mental clarity and to help my body feel grounded. I live in a constant non-stop go-go environment. While I wouldn’t trade it for another lifestyle, I accumulate excess energy which results in feeling drained, tired, and cranky. Connecting with the outdoors allows me to release the built-up excess energy.

Walking enables me to feel grounded, secure, recharged and present. They keep me sane, distract from various external triggers, and clear my mind of pressure, stress, and self-judgement. I’ve also had multiple discoveries on these walks that wouldn’t have happened if I distracted myself by watching TV or scrolling through social media. I’ve reevaluated my core values, uncovered subconscious stressors, and found forgiveness.

When my mind races on these walks; I know I need to pause silently say to myself, “I am here.” “There is nothing I need to worry about in this present moment.” “I appreciate the sun rays, clear fresh air, and spectacular colors in nature.”

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN! 

You can mindfully walk anywhere. If you haven’t practiced before, a great place to start is a park, the beach, or a trail.

Whether you are walking out in nature or down a congested city block, be aware of every step you take. Concentrate on your breath. Notice the sensation beneath your feet as you walk, listen to the sounds, feel the breeze on your skin, smell the fresh air, and observe the beauty surrounding you.
