What New Yorkers Really Do On the Weekends

If you’re looking for a post that tells you the Top 5 things to do when visiting New York, this unfortunately isn’t it (though this is something I will do!)

Take a peak into the crazy 72-hours of a extroverted, millennial gal living in Manhattan trying to balance self-care, completing errands, a healthy lifestyle, and strengthening friendships! I’m keeping it real here. This was a detox weekend for me. The past few weekends I’ve been traveling, partying, & eating out constantly. Don’t get me wrong it’s been great, but I utilized this weekend to hang back, catch up on sleep, and jumping back into my usual routine.

FRIDAY, 8/25/17: I’m lucky enough to have Summer Fridays where I leave the office at 1pm. There’s two options of what to do after work on these Friday’s: Happy Hour or run errands while stores are still relatively empty. Today was definitely an errand/’me’ day!

I headed uptown for my 2pm facial appointment. By 4pm, I was relaxed, skin clean, and ready to go! I stopped at Trader Joe’s and grabbed some of my essentials, spotted my FAVORITE ‘fast-food’ place, Maoz. It’s a mediterranean restaurant with a self- serve toppings bar (you heard that correctly). So my go-to is always a salad with no protein (I add that later when I’m at home … that’s how they overcharge) then pile it high with chick peas, roasted carrots, broccoli/cauliflower, pickled cabbage, tabouli, beets, and their garlic sauce. YUM.

To get home across town (from the west to east side) I took the car sharing app VIA where I had a promo code for $2.95 rides anywhere within Manhattan. My roommate texted me on the way home to grab a cocktail at one of my favorite bars, The Penrose on 85th Street & 2nd Av. Had a extra dirty martini with three $1 oysters, which was delicious. Ended the night back at our apartment catching up on Suits.

I have to give my roommate a shoutout here. Having someone you can depend on, trust, and feel 100% comfortable with is rare and removes unwanted stress form your life, knowing when you go home it’s your safe place and not uncomfortable.

SATURDAY, 8/26/17: One of the best feelings is waking up Saturday not hungover, especially at 25 years old (which I’ve admittedly learned quickly). I woke up at 7am, made two scrambled eggs, Trader Joe’s instant hot coffee and finished Season 2 of HBO’s Insecure before heading to to my 9am cycling class at NYSC.

Now, I’ll be totally honest with you. I LOVE group workout classes, but I despise going to the first one and being the new girl. It’s an irrational fear of mine. A few months ago, I noticed NYSC has all of these classes I could take instead of going to SoulCycle for $34/class. I’ve signed up & canceled this NYSC cycling class about four times, but this morning I went and it was great!

Post-gym I dragged my three bags of laundry to my local laundromat: two comforters, two sets of bedding + clothes. As everything was washing & drying, I sat in the local park with my La Croix and Oprah Magazine (while you’re here – go read this). I then headed home to clean & set up my new bedding which I’m obsessed with.

It was still early in the day, so I went on a long walk around the Upper East Side & the Jacqueline Kennedy Reservoir in Central Park (my all time favorite place in Manhattan). I listened to a Podcast and took in the fresh air.

Around 7:30pm, I cooked myself up 8oz of Trader Joe’s Wild Salmon with roasted veggies and cauliflower rice (recipe here). I promised myself I would stay in this weekend, so my good childhood friend came over around 9pm for a homemade Vodka Soda and headed out to meet her friends around 10:30pm, when I went to bed!

SUNDAY, 8/27/17:  Sunday is my day of preparation for a successful week & self-care. Since I was up at 6am, I started the day with meal prep. I made four salads for work lunches: romaine, spinach, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, cucumber, & frozen green beans (microwaved, tossed in OVOO, salt, pepper – let cool down). I also threw a bunch of asparagus into a 400 degree oven with seasonings to roast for about an hour.

While those were cooking, I sat at my table, lit my Bath & Body Works Peach Bellini candle, poured a glass of iced coffee with unsweetened cashew milk, and journaled about my day, what I’m thankful for, and the week ahead.

Around 11:45am, I met my friend at Le Pain Quotidien, then headed down a few aves to meet another girlfriend for a Carl Schultz Park stroll. In between, I also got to chat with one of my closest besties who just started Law School! So amazing that these three girls entered my life, each at completely different times and in different environments, and I get to interact with them all within a few hours of each other. They each add such an amazing energy and value to my life.

When I arrived home, I was outright exhausted. I started getting those “should” thoughts around going to the gym, but I knew I needed to give myself rest so I took an hour nap. I woke up feeling SO much better, and actually ended up going to the gym in such a better mood! Did a 15 minute weight/squat rotation, then did the elliptical machine with incline for 30 minutes.

Lastly, I cooked up a delicious zoodle dinner topped with Rao’s red sauce, sauteed mushrooms and onions, and crispy salmon.

Ending the night re-watching a few episodes of Friends and drinking tea! Ready for a successful week ahead.
